They were first collected,the Japanese for Tokugawa shogunate palaces, then popularity spread,Europe, and later,America where its low light and humidity requirements make,a common feature,malls and offices. The genus name,Greek – rhapis, meaning “needle”; and the species name,Latin for “tall”, though,excelsa,not the tallest,the genus.
